Take a Stitch Tuesday #20 - Butterfly Chain

This week for Take a Stitch Tuesday we have the Butterfly Chain.

I might declare this my new favorite stitch. It is so much easier than it looks and is really quick to stitch up.

First, stitch a row of straight stitches in groups of three (or more). I drew two parallel lines to keep my stitches around the same length and tried my best to keep equal distance between them. But you don't have to be perfect!

Then, bundle the straight stitch groups using twisted chain. To really understand how to do this part, I followed this tutorial.

I used the butterfly chain stitch on my last embroidery for the Pi Project - more photos on that in this post.

See you next week for the next Take a Stitch Tuesday!

The Pi Project

There was a recent post on the Mr. XStitch blog about The Pi Project.

This year on March 14, the date will be 3/14/15, which matches the first five digits of Pi: 3.1415. This alignment of digits will not occur again for another century.

To celebrate, Sally Sellers in Vancouver, WA is creating a fabric ribbon of Pi digits as long as they can make it.

Anyone can send in a number to be a part of this fiber art. If you would like to participate, click here for more information.

I decided to contribute a number and stitched up a zero.

To create a solid zero, I decided to fill it by couching blue pearl cotton with black floss.

Up close couching.

Really up close.

Here is the zero finished. Then I stitched two rows of butterfly chain with yellow and red floss.

Next I added a green banner behind the zero (The banner is a Sublime Stitching pattern).
