Another French Knot Sheep

embroidered sheep

I have a thing for french knot sheep. I love stitching them. I find french knots very soothing. This isn't the first time I have stitched this sheep pattern either.

Starting with the branches in stem stitch and leaves with detached daisy chain.

Added the chain stitch border in blue - following my favorite method from Sublime Stitching.

The tree trunk is satin stitch and the ground outline stem stitch.

Finished the sheep with white french knots for the body, satin stitch for the head, and bullion knots for the legs.

The first time I stitched this pattern, I didn't add any grass and stitched the tree trunk differently.

This time I added some french knots and cross stitches around the border for decoration.

I now prefer to finish the back of my hoops using this excellent tutorial with felt.

Little Embroidered Sheep with Flowers

I've finally finished my latest little sheep embroidery.

This is a gift for someone's birthday that I am going to mount on a little canvas (which will be my next post) and will take more photos so you can see how small this actually is.

Whenever I post little sheep embroidery they always seem to be the most viewed posts - I guess everyone loves little sheep!

Here is another little sheep I stitched for a birthday gift and my most viewed post of all time of a little sheep and chain stitch.

Take a Stitch Tuesday #15 - French Knot

Next up is the French Knot for Take a Stitch Tuesday.

The French knot is a fun stitch. Here I used 4 strands of DMC floss #958 - a minty green color that I normally never choose for some reason.

I like how it looks with the black and red.

One tip I highly suggest is using a milliners needle for the French knot. The eye of the needle and the shaft of the needle are the same size so it really makes it easier to pull the needle through the wrapped thread of the knot.

I think French knots add great texture to embroidery and is good for a filler stitch – I've used it for filling in little sheep and like the fluffy woolly look from the French knots.
